Characters and minutes are different units

AI voice tools often bill text while a project is planned in minutes. Converting between them requires an assumption about speaking speed and character density for the language, tone and pauses.

A fixed equivalence can be a starting assumption, but it should remain visible and editable. A technical script, dramatic narration and fast read do not produce the same duration from the same character count.

Include retries and script changes

The first audio may fail on pronunciation, emotion, pacing or a later editorial change. If every final minute requires several versions, actual cost must include the text processed in those attempts.

Separate short corrections from complete regenerations. Rebuilding one sentence should not be modeled like synthesizing the entire script again, especially for long-form work.

Match the plan to production capacity

A plan with a large character allowance can look inexpensive per minute but become costly when the team cannot use the balance. Calculate how many minutes can actually be scripted, reviewed and edited each month.

Then compare expected consumption with allowance, expiry, rollover and overage. A monthly equivalent does not always represent the cash paid upfront.

Measure cost per accepted narration

The final metric should include processed text, billed retries and any cleanup or editing required for publication. Dividing the subscription fee by generated minutes alone can hide unused allowance and human work.

Once you have first-party data, replace the characters-per-minute assumption with the median from your own scripts. The estimate will then reflect your language, style and actual pacing.
